It’s official, and Google wants the world to know: Google is a weapons contractor. With this announcement, Google formalizes its war sales machine, and cedes control of how its technology is used to Lockheed Martin: the world’s largest military company.

Lockheed Martin supplies the Israeli military with weapons including fighter jets, attack helicopters, and missiles. Since Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza in 2007, the Israeli military has used these weapons to kill Palestinians and destroy their homes and infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and water and electric systems.

Google’s announcement is full of euphemisms, but the meaning is crystal clear: Google will provide generative artificial intelligence technology to power missiles and bombs. In other words, Google is selling its technology and services to help Lockheed Martin more effectively and efficiently surveil, injure, and kill people.

Instead of heeding mass worker calls to divest from military and war operations, Google is deepening its ties to militaries, defense contractors, genocidaires, and apartheid regimes. Just last month, Google announced it will spend $32 billion in its biggest deal in the corporation’s history in order to acquire Wiz, an Israeli startup — all while the country continues to wage a genocide against the Palestinian people.

We understand now why Google dropped its AI principles and commitment to not provide AI for weapons or surveillance. We understand now why Google purged 50 of our coworkers after last year’s sit-in, during which we demanded Google drop Project Nimbus, end its military contracts, stop providing the tech that powers Israel’s genocide of Palestinians, and end its systemic discrimination of Arab, Palestinian, and Muslim Googlers.

Workers will not stand for our labor being weaponized for apartheid, genocide, and war.
